David Mobley (RE/MAX World Long Drive Champion 2004)
"The first rule is put your ego on the shelf and hit the ball better, not harder. This is how I am able to improve from one round to the next and hit my best balls of the day in the final round."
Carl Wolter (RE/MAX World Long Drive Champion 2002)
Weight Training : "Weight train at least 3 to 4 times a week, using mainly free weights. Olympic lifts such as power cleans, hang cleans, push press and overhead snatch are the best lifts to improve explosive power. Also include a half-hour medicine ball workout into your program 2 to 3 times a week. For my cardio workouts, I will ride mountain bike, motocross or run for a minimum of 30 minutes. When thinking about your long drive swing, concentrate on a target that would coincide with your ball trajectory and accelerate your swing to that target, not your ball."
Vince Ciurluini (2003 LDA Tour winner)
Swing speed : "People always ask me, 'Can someone who weighs 180 pounds hit the golf ball as far as someone weighing 250?' My answer refers to club head speed rather than body weight. You have to utilize the strongest muscles in your body to generate that speed, and all body types are different.
If it is your legs: You have to drive your hips hard through the ball; If it is your back: You must have a deep, full shoulder turn and get that club way beyond parallel; If it is your arms: You must lag the club as long as possible before you snap the wrists through the ball. These are the three most important speed generating elements in my swing. And, of course, remember to "swing absolutely as hard as you possibly can!"
